FAGARAS FORTRESS

Fagaras Fortress was built in 1310 by Ladislas Apo right in the city centre.
With an initial strategic role, the Citadel and surrounding areas have joined in 1526 in Transylvania under the leadership Governor Stefan Mailath.
In 1599 Mihai the Brave made his entrance into the fortress.
The old fortress remained faithfull to the prince and in the hard days of nobility’s rebellion, gave him and his family protection, lady’s Stanca statue, the grieved wife of Mihai, situated at the fortress entrance, reminds those dramatic moments.
From the beginning of the XVII century and by the end of it fortress was, with some small interruptions, the capital of the princes of Transylvania, Diet hall, located on the first floor, hosted four of the meetings held here.
With the passage of time the fortress was degraded and came to be used on post prison (between 1948-1960, here were incarcerated especially political prisoners.
